For those folks who stick to one sport, the thought of a triathlon is daunting. Any experienced runner, swimmer, or cycler, however, has discovered the benefits of cross training. Swimming, for example, on a runner's day off allows you to maintain your cardiovascular endurance while giving your running muscles a rest, even strengthening your ability to run efficiently. If you cross train enough, attempting a triathlon seems a natural transition.
If the thought to attempt your first triathlon (or sign up for another) crosses your mind, Marylanders are fortunate to have the Columbia Triathlon Association on home turf. It's almost time to start a good training program for any of the triathlon events which will take place in 2010. The Association's events, taking place in Columbia, MD, are so popular that they fill up within days. The Aflac Iron Girl Triathlon, for example, scheduled for August 22, 2010, opened registration on Tuesday, November 3rd and was full just one day later on Wednesday, November 4th. The Columbia Triathlon, to be held on May 23, 2010, is also sold out already. Registration is still open for the Celebration Sprint Triathlon on June 27, 2010, but not likely for long.

Triathlon distances can be confusing. Here is a breakdown of the various triathlon distance events:
Sprint triathlon: .62 mile swim, 17.5 mile bike, 3.4 mile run
Olympic triathlon: .93 mile swim, 25.42 mile bike, 6.2 mile run
Half Ironman triathlon: 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run
Ironman/Ultra triathlon: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run (full marathon)
Whichever event you choose and whatever distance, it's time to register and think about your training regimen.
Go!
