Risa Glaser: attorney, entrepreneur, and philanthropist
Ever since she was in fourth grade, Risa Glaser knew she wanted to be an attorney. However, after her first year at Brandeis University, she realized that the traditional law career was not what she desired. She knew that she wouldn’t enjoy trial law due to her shyness at the time, but was intrigued by her father’s consulting business. She decided that she wanted to pursue a career as a business advisor, advising small companies on legal, financial and management issues, and helping them run their businesses more effectively and profitably. Risa took additional business courses at night to get her MBA in addition to her law degree. She then joined her father in his consulting practice, Glaser Associates, and currently serves as the President.
Risa loves her career, but realized that there was more to life than just running a successful business. She learned at an early age the value of community service and giving to others in need. Her father founded the Dix Hills Jewish Center and her mother had been a lifelong volunteer on behalf of her alma mater, Brandeis University. Risa’s family taught her that dedicating your time to charitable organizations can be as rewarding as any other thing you do in life.
Risa has been a Make-a-Wish Foundation (
http://www.wish.org/) volunteer for many years helping the organization raise money to help brighten the lives of children with life threatening illnesses. Her support and dedication to the Foundation earned her their Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award and the Avis “We Try Harder Award” for community service which was presented to her on the field at Yankee Stadium. In addition, Risa currently serves as the Chairperson of the Nassau County Alumni Admissions Council for Brandeis University.
Risa has parlayed her business knowledge and charitable affinity to start another business called Eclectic Events, Inc. (
http://eclecticeventsinc.com/Home-Page.html). The business specializes in event strategies and implementation for singles events, reunions, not-for-profit events, corporate parties, and celebratory events. She also runs the largest speed dating events in the tri-state area. Her 8MinuteDating (
www.8minutedating.com) events draw 50 to 100 guests per event where singles meet people at a table and then move from table to table to meet other guests. The events attract a professional group of singles, are held at upscale venues, and are extremely well-run.
She has now expanded Eclectic Events, Inc. to include other interesting singles events. She has created “Dating for a Cause” events where singles are encouraged to attend events at local charities to meet other community-oriented singles and volunteer for a charity at the same time. One example would be the Single Mingle at the New Jersey Food Bank. Each of these monthly events has sold out for the entire year. Singles come to the Food Bank in Hillside, NJ where they are treated to a continental breakfast catered by Risa herself. The singles then play icebreaker games and learn about how the food bank helps feed the hungry. Finally, the attendees work together to clean and sort cans of food.
Risa is a success in business, but just as importantly, in life. She was honored recently when she gave a speech at the National Honor Society induction ceremony at her high school. We can all learn something from Risa from a line in her speech, “…in the process of giving of yourself, you really get so much more in return in the good feeling you will have from helping others.”
