Every once in awhile a storefront pops up that I just don’t get- like the businesses on Federal that peddle "Muffler Man – and doughnuts!" "Used Tire Shop- and tamales!" But even in my dizzied state of consumer confusion, I can actually imagine myself indulging in one of the aforementioned spicy corn yums the next time I need to get some slightly-used tread slapped on my phat ride. Still, it appears to be a bit of an identity catawampus.
Meet Taboot Art: Custom Screen Printer, Retail Clothing outfitter and Local Artist Vender that also dabbles in large chunks of amethyst and geodes-- oh yeah, and some men’s and women’s vintage-- all shoved into a tiny store front at 3000 East Colfax. It seems to be catering to that new breed of young street hipster/hippy that I like to call hippyster. Yes, Hippyster: those new school kids that smoke a lot of weed, listen to Phil Lesh, claim to worship the Hindu Goddess Shiva and smother their little round baby faces in beards- lots and lots of beards.
I don’t mean to be mean…the two hippysters behind the counter at Taboot Art were friendly enough and the prices on the free love-inspired t-shirts were pretty damn good, but there was nothing for an old lady like me to buy. It all makes a bit of sense really, as I could never find anything to purchase at ye’ old tie dye haven Freaky’s on Broadway either and that hippy hovel just recently burned to a pulp leaving a serious gap in garb for this new groovy generation. So maybe the scatterboxed branding is just, seriously over my head man. I guess the folks at Taboot figure if you’re in the market for an original screen printed design that a giant piece of rose quartz might somehow also fit the bill, but in my opinion, they might be more successful touting tamales.
