Your Mom told me she wishes you'd take her shopping this year.
I heard a story once about (my not-so-secret crush) Peter Forsberg and how his parents literally had skates on his feet before shoes...and although this may indeed be where he developed his sexah skating style, as a certified shoe-slut, I can’t imagine nor can I condone such blasphemy.
Precision-pushing parents are not the only things Pete and I have in common; however, my professional fashion passion was imprinted on me by my parents too, as my mother was dragging me out to Door Busters before I could talk.
Mom ran a rigid training of getting me in there - head down and directed- ricocheting in between big bottomed bargain hunters and straight down the center to our designated goal bin (which had been plotted out either on a sketched route map or in an actual walk through the day before). Once I pushed my way past all those cat ladies and suburban housewives I was to just start grabbing - as my mother’s game strategy was that even the most crazed customer wouldn't snatch stuff out of a little girl's hands.
Well, we won’t have to worry about body checks this weekend as Fashion Denver's Springtime Market FRESH features over 25 local designers- so there should be plenty to go around. The Saturday Day-Before-Mom’s-Day fashion fair will run from noon until 7 pm, with intermittent catwalk shows throughout the event. "Shopping for Spring never was hotter" says founder Brandi Shigley, "and FRESH offers Colorado trend-setters the chance to pick up the best in style while supporting local artists and designers."
And since FRESH is housed in the beautifully remodeled and spacious Oriental Theater, my mom should be settled with the fact that my days of skating uprink through a mass huddle of mad bargain hunters have finally ended. Shoot, who am I kidding? Like moms and daughters everywhere- no matter how old I get, she WILL always be the coach of me.
Shoppers Beware!
