What does Paris Hilton have in common with Bill Clinton? Or Hillary, with Gore Vidal? No, they weren't spending the weekend together.  At one time or another, from the 1900’s on, Antigua has been visited or lived in by D.H.Lawrence, Simone de Bellevoir, Gore Vidal, the Clintons albeit on different occasions when they weren’t speaking to each other, and every Central American president, strongman, and caudillo. Miss Guatemala was recently seen.

Che Guevara? close but not quite: he and his girlfriend Hilda had a picnic in the mountains between here and Guatemala City in the early 50’s, when he was learning revolution from the ground up.  Paris? She was here a few months ago, doing charity work for some Mayan children, as was Hillary in 1998. Bill was here in 1999 for the Central American Summit, and hid out at the very excellent Posada del Angel on Avenida 4th south.
He didn’t exactly shun the spotlight, as his picture can be still seen in restaurants and jade stores: Bill ATE here! .He apparently didn’t patronize any cigar shops, or if he did, no photos were taken.

Who was Antoine de Saint-Exupery? answer: the famous French aviator/author from WWI, who totaled his plane in Guatemala City in the late 30’s, sustained serious injuries and convalesced in Antigua. The setting for his most famous work, The Little Prince, shares uncanny resemblances to our three famous volcanoes, Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. He and Gore Vidal(Myra Breckenridge, assorted biographies)lived here and Gore owned a house on 3rd Avenida Norte from 1947-1949

And Pope Paul II was here in the late 1900’s…something to do with beatizing a potential saint, Hermano Pedro. The votes haven’t been counted or there’s some kind of snag in the Vatican: what’s a few more centuries here and there?
