Lucky with one of dozens of her toys

The woman talking on her cell phone in the gleaming lobby of the new Arlington Animal Services facility was visibly anxious. Apparently a car had just struck their family dog and a daughter was calling her for help. The Animal Services Manager, Mr. Jay Sabatucci immediately came from his office to assist. The on-site veterinarian,  Gail Rapport, D.V.M., arrived, spoke with professional compassion to the daughter via mom’s cell phone and soon the injured dog was being examined in the facility’s well-equipped clinic. Later, when the two women left with the pregnant dog, Mr. Sabatucci went outside to make sure that the dog and the people were going to be O.K.

“That sort of thing is not part of our normal services, but we are here to help the community”, said Mr. Sabatucci. What I saw that day was more than just duty. Every staff person involved showed a depth of compassion and concern that went well beyond just efficiency or professionalism.

Arlington’s Animal Services operation and its new facility is a credit to the community, the people who made it happen and those who make it work every day. The building is more than an attractive, superbly planned, clean and well run community resource. It is the hub of an operation that reaches throughout the area to help improve the health, safety and quality of life of Arlington’s citizens. But beyond the tangibles of city services, the building at 1000 Southeast Green Oaks Boulevard is a place where love and devotion live. I know.

The first time my wife and I saw Lucky at the Animal Services facility she did not have much of a chance of joining the other adopted dog, Biscuit, in our family. The flashing eyes, sharp white teeth and deep barking as she jumped excitedly on the fence of her enclosure seemed more than we needed at our house. It wasn’t meanness; she was just a tightly wound bundle of alpha-dog, look at ME, energy that went to maximum output without much encouragement. However, on a second visit to the shelter, a chance meeting and great Animal Services staff work changed our minds. As I write this Lucky is asleep, limp as a rag and snoring gently with her head on top of my right foot. With a bit of work, she has become a sweet and gentle companion who always gives unconditional love.

Do you need some of that sort of thing in your life? At any given time there are about 100 dogs and cats waiting for adoption at Arlington Animal Services. The paid staff and volunteers there will be glad to help you find a companion who would be forever grateful if you would just take them home, feed them and rub their belly.
