With The Catcher and the Lie just out in book format, this examiner thought we could catch up with the author and find out what drives her to write.

So let's get right into the Q and A.

Q. What inspired you to write The Catcher and the Lie?

RO.  I’m a huge baseball fan. I grew up going to Fenway Park each summer to watch the Red Sox.  Even though sports stories are often frowned upon in romance, I decided to write something that I both knew and loved. Fortunately my editor at Samhain turned out to be a bit of a baseball nut, as well.

Q. What was it like to get the acceptance letter for The Catcher and the Lie?

RO. It was amazing. Before I had even finished the story I knew Samhain Publishing was my target. Of course, I prepared myself for rejection because that’s much more common – so my contract offer was an enormous surprise.

Q. What draws you to Romance?

RO. I think the romance genre is so vast that it offers the opportunity to write comedy, suspense, history, paranormal – whatever inspires you. As long as you provide a happy ever after you basically have free reign. As both a reader and a writer that’s appealing.

Q. What inspires you to write?

RO. For me it’s all about the challenge. I grew up reading every spare moment and I wondered about the dynamics of writing a book. It seemed like an impossible task; something I could never accomplish. When I wrote my first manuscript my only goal was to complete it. The thought of getting published never really entered my mind.

Q. Where do you get the basis for the locations in your books?

RO. I believe in the adage of writing what you know. All of my stories are set in regions that I’m familiar with. So far my two published novels have taken place in and around Boston and Cape Cod. I grew up there, so it’s much easier to visualize specific places.

Q. Are you working on a current Work In Progress?

RO. Absolutely.   Right now I ‘m working on a story that focuses on a secondary character from “Ready to Take a Chance Again”. I’ve had several readers ask what happens to this particular person so I’ve decided to give him his own book.

Q. If any does Rochester play in your progress of writing?

RO.  Rochester is a community that offers writers many opportunities to develop craft. Groups such as LCRW provide new and established authors with a strong network that can help guide you as you try to move forward in your career. Writing and contracting a story are only pieces of the puzzle. There’s so much more after you’ve reached that point that many of us never think about.
