Few things in life are as certain as death, taxes and Hollywood sequels. While it's universally understood that Michael Bay's latest feature from DreamWorks will be a success, skeptics wonder just how big Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will actually be? 2007's Transformers opened with a solid $70.5 million and went on to make $319.2 million domestically ($708.3 million worldwide) and easily made back its paltry summer budget of $150 million within the first two weeks of its theatrical run. Now, with an inflated budget of around a reported $300 million, will Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (T:ROTF) make back its investment?
Hellz to the yeah.
In a brief statement from MovieTickets.com, the online ticketing firm reports that ticket sales for T:ROTF "are outpacing ticket sales for Transformers by almost 3-to-1 at the same point in the sales cycle – eight days prior to each film’s release. Interestingly, IMAX ticket sales at MovieTickets.com for Transformers 2 account for close to half of all ticket sales for the film." In addition to domestic sales, MichaelBay.com is reporting that the film has already grossed $20 million over the weekend in Japan and the U.K. alone.
Studio projections show a lot of hope for the nostalgia piece based the Hasbro toy line, as DreamWorks is literally banking on the film making $175 million during it's opening week. This would put the popcorn flick on track with its predecessor but far from Dark Knight money.
The Dark Knight, the sequel to the Batman franchise reboot, Batman Begins, debuted with the biggest opening ever, a record-breaking $158.4 million.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters everywhere June 24th.
