'The Proposal'

Beating projections by $12 million, the Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds romantic-comedy, The Proposal, took No.1 at the box office with a surprising $34.1 million. Utilizing the void of rom-coms to its advantage, The Proposal benefited by being the only funny date movie in theaters.

Proposal's euphoria may be short-lived as the action event of the summer, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, hits theaters this Wednesday. Yet being the only cutesy date movie may act as brilliant counter-programming against the highly-anticipated Michael Bay feature. "Not everybody will go to see Transformers," said Disney distribution president Chuck Viane.

Jack Black's stone-age comedy, Year One, made $20.2 million and scored the No.4 position and met most studio projections.

The Hangover, easily the surprise hit of the summer, has now grossed $152.9 million and is making its way closer to the Top 20 R-rated grossers of all-time. Not bad for a film with no brand-name talent.

America, here's your top ten:

  1. The Proposal - $34.1 million
  2. The Hangover - $26.9 million
  3. Up - $21.3 million
  4. Year One - $20.2 million
