Michael Jackson, who often mentioned that he related best to the Disney character Peter Pan and heavily based his private amusement park, Neverland, on Disney themes, enjoyed a long and happy relationship with all of the Disney Resorts, even performing at Disneyland’s 25th Anniversary Special on CBS.
I remember as a child in the 80s, visiting Disneyland. My sister and I each got to choose a show to visit, and while my sister almost always chose to have us stand in line for the Country Bear Jamboree, I was always eager to dash over to Tomorrowland, grab 3-D glasses, and enjoy the 20-minute scifi musical Captain EO. Below is my favorite scene, in which Captain EO unlocks the good that he knows is buried deep inside the evil space queen (played by Angelica Huston) with his song "We Are Here to Change the World."
Captain EO, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas, enjoyed performances at Disneyland, Epcot, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris between 1986 and 1998. It was replaced by the 3-D short of “Honey I Shrunk the Audience.”
Spending time in the air conditioned theater underneath Space Mountain with my family and trying to catch Fuzzball, Captain EO’s fuzzy alien sidekick as he zipped around in 3-D, is one of my most cherished memories of Disneyland.
Mr. Jackson, you will be missed. Rest in peace.
