With help from Mickey Mouse, Chicago residents begin Disney volunteering on Sept. 29, 2009

In 2010, if you want to spend a day at Disneyland without paying admission, you’ll have to work for it.  In an effort to encourage community service , the Disney parks have announced their new “Cheers to Volunteers” campaign that will grant complimentary one-day admission to either the Walt Disney World or the Disneyland Resort for the first one million people in 2010 who complete one of the eligible volunteer opportunities or projects available through the Disney Hands On Network.

Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts stated:

In 2010, we want to recognize and add one more reason for celebration: the contributions people make to their communities every day.  We want to inspire 1 million volunteers – people who will invest time and energy to make their own communities and neighborhoods a better place.”

Starting on January 1, 2010, guests over the age of 6 can follow 3 simple steps to earn their admission.   Participants must pre-register and sign up for eligible volunteer opportunity at disneyparks.com in order to be eligible for this “Give A Day, Get A Disney Day” program.

Although Disney fans may be initially overwhelmed by the amount of effort that this “Year to Volunteer” poses compared to the 2009 “Celebrate” campaign,  In my opinion, the problem with last year’s complimentary birthday admission was that, since no one shares their actual birth date with each of the people they would actually like to celebrate with, friends and family had to pay admission to accompany a guest on their birthday.   With this new “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day“ program, friends an family can plan a community service day together, and then plan for another Disney day together!
