Rebbie Jackson, at 59, is the eldest of who we may refer to as the Jackson 9.
She is also the quietist. We hear little from or about her.
This was not by choice. Like the other Jacksons, Rebbie made a serious effort to have a huge career in music. She rivals her brothers and sisters in talent and charm. But, success in the entertainment business is a coin toss, even if your last name is Jackson.
Her biggest single was “Centipede” and she came out with four albums: “Centipede,” “Reaction,” “R U Tuff Enough” and “Yours Faithfully.”
If you find the four albums, grab them and you won’t be disappointed, but here is a list of some of her best tracks you may be able to find and download:
1) “Centipede,” a song written and produced by Michael Jackson.
2) “I Feel for You,” which was written and originally recorded by Prince. Chaka Khan had more success with it that anyone else who recorded it.
3) “A Fork in the Road,” a cover of a Smokey Robinson song.
4) “Reaction.” There are several versions – the dance mix is the best.
5) “You Send Away the Rain,” recorded with Cheap Trick lead singer Robin Zander.
6) “Tonight I’m Yours,” a collaboration with Isaac Hayes.
7) “Fly Away,” a duet with Michael Jackson.
8) “Forever Young,” a beautiful version of the Bob Dylan song that plays at the end of the movie “Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home.”
Rebbie was a regular on the Jacksons TV program, which aired on CBD for one year beginning in 1976 and she made several appearances on “Soul Train” (including a duet with the New Edition).
There are incomplete plans to bring “Soul Train” back to DVDs. We hope we’ll catch Rebbie on them.
Below is a video of Michael Jackson introducing Rebbie before she sings “Midnight at the Oasis.”
