There are many things about I Love You, Beth Cooper that may stun you.
First, you may be stunned that producers Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, who brought us several Harry Potter movies, could come up with something this mediocre.
Second, you may be stunned that someone with someone with proven acting skills like Hayden Panettiere would agree to star in the movie.
You probably will not be stunned that, by Hollywood standards, it was produced on a modest budget and still lost money.
The premise: Denis Cooverman (Paul Rust) decides to use his position as valedictorian at a small high school to declare “I love you, Beth Cooper” during his graduation address.
Beth (Panettiere) is embarrassed by the speech, but shows up at Denis’ house with two of her friends for what passes as a graduation party for five.
Beth has a stereotypical military-minded boyfriend who beats Denis up several times.
Beth flashes her physical attributes for the camera a few times, there are wild cars rides and the valedictorian acts like a nerd.
That just about sums up the movie. I won’t offer a spoiler on how it turns out, even though you will probably figure it out long before it’s near the end.
It’s difficult to imagine a beginning actress not being able to take on the role of Beth Cooper. It is disappointing that Hayden Panettiere agreed to portray the primary character in the movie.
