This is the time of year when we all start craving mom’s pumpkin pie…pumpkin cake, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin bread, etc. It just feels right this time of year when stores have stocked large bins full of them around every corner. A little sugar, cinnamon and whipped cream can go a long way.
What many pet owners are not aware of is that pumpkin is a good treat for their companions year round. This does not include the cinnamon, sugar and whipped cream of course, but plain canned pumpkin is known to assist in clearing up both constipation and diarrhea in pets. Be sure that this is not the canned pumpkin “pie filling”, but just plain pumpkin. Dogs are typically more receptive than cats to the treat, but it is appropriate for both species in moderation. Small dogs should receive only about 1-2 teaspoons daily and 1-3 tablespoons for large breeds. As always, if you have any questions about your pet’s dietary needs you should ask your veterinarian.
If you choose to use canned pumpkin to treat the occasional diarrhea or constipation that is certainly acceptable, but be aware that should such issues persist more than 24 to 36 or show signs of blood, your pet may need veterinary care.
Some studies have shown that canned pumpkin may assist obese pets as a part of a weight loss program because of its high fiber content. It is also rich in vitamin A and potassium. Pumpkin treats can also be made for dogs with like biscuits.
So as you and the family gather around the table to celebrate the holidays with some festive pumpkin dishes, know that your pet does not have to be left out of the festivities!
