Gary Williams

Jordan Williams, a freshman forward for the University of Maryland men's basketball team, is probably breathing a little easier these days. Williams was charged with assault and breach of peace from an August 8 altercation in his hometown of Torrington, Connecticut. All charges were dropped this week.

Head coach Gary Williams, no relation to the player, will presumably be sweating less knowing that his player is out of legal trouble. Williams is listed on the Maryland roster as 6'10'', 260 lbs., tied for tallest and heaviest with sophomore center Steve Goins. The most glaring weakness on the Maryland squad last season was the front court and Williams made a point of bringing in some size.

Lindy's recently ranked Maryland among the ten best programs of the decade, and the publication also listed the Terps as No. 20 in its preseason poll. Although Williams has yet to play a second of college basketball, it is doubtful the Terps would be considered so highly for the 2009-10 season without him.

Midnight Madness, or Maryland Madness as it is being called these days, is a little over a week away. I am sure all Maryland fans, and the people involved with this little incident would be more than happy to put this issue behind them and get ready for a new year. I certainly am.
