Saint Mary’s women’s soccer season came to an all-too-familiar end Saturday in a 4-1 home loss to Loyola Marymount.
The Gaels concluded their season with a 9-11 record, 1-6 in the West Coast Conference, their fourth straight season with fewer than two conference victories.
The Gaels’ lone goal was scored by Jessica Menzhuber, her 11th of the season, tied for seventh in a single season with Stacey Shaw in 1999 and the most for a Saint Mary’s player since Katie Frattore had 13 in 2001.
Menzhuber, a forward from Mission Viejo, was one of six Saint Mary’s seniors playing her final game. Her 26 points during the 2009 season was the eighth best total in Saint Mary’s history, and her three game-winning goals tied for ninth in a single season.
Her 17 career goals tied for ninth on the all-time Saint Mary’s list, and she holds the record for scoring the fastest goal in a game, connecting only six seconds into a game against San Francisco as a freshman in 2006.
Loyola Marymount 11-6-2/3-3-1), paced by Julie Gallaudet’s two goals had a 4-0 lead when Saint Mary’s was awarded a free kick in the 85th minute. Daelyn Paul touched the ball, and Menzhuber fired a short through the Loyola Marymount wall into the left corner of the net. Paul was credited with her team-leading sixth assist of the season.
While the Gaels again struggled in league under first-year coach Kai Edwards, their nine victories were the most since 2002.
“We scored in every game in conference this season, and that shows the little steps the seniors have made to help this program grow,” Edwards told the Saint Mary’s sports information office following the game.
“This day was just another step in the growth of the program.”
Saint Mary’s lone conference victory came over No. 25 San Diego. They suffered four 2-1 losses, two in overtime, including one to No. 20 Santa Clara.
