Saint Mary’s men’s basketball coach Randy Bennett will have some good new for fans at Friday’s Tip-Off Dinner scheduled for the Blackhawk Museum in Danville.
Although the Gaels are missing four starters and six letter winners from last season’s 28-7 team that finished second in the West Coast Conference with a 10-4 record despite being without star guard Patrick Mills for nine games with a broken hand, the team was picked to finish third in the pre-season poll by conference coaches.
Mills, who was drafted in the second round of the National Basketball Association draft by Portland following his sophomore year, made the Blazer’s 15-man roster despite missing most of the summer with a broken foot.
Also gone is three-time all-West Coast Conference selection Diamon Simpson, who was the conference’s defensive player of the year last year.
The Gaels were chosen to finish third in the upcoming season behind perennial champion Gonzaga and Portland, which was the choice of two of the conference’s eight coaches to upset the Zags. They had 48 and 44 points respectively in the poll, while Saint Mary’s had 34, followed by San Francisco at 26.
Senior Omar Samhan, a 6-foot-11 all-conference player last year when he averaged 14.1 points and 9.4 rebounds, was a pre-season all-conference pick.
Television commentator Doug Gottlieb will be the keynote speaker at Friday’s event, which begins at 6 p.m. For last-minute $100 reservations for adults and $50 reservations for youngsters 16 and under, contact Tom Carroll at (925) 631-8685.
