Where you can eat like a President

Want to visit D.C. during or shortly after the Inauguration, and get the presidential treatment? That's easy. The Loews Madison Hotel is serving a special menu of presidential lunch and dinner favorites, from Eisenhower to G.W. Bush, in its swank Palette Restaurant. For appetizers, that means JFK's cream of tomato soup with crushed popcorn, Ike and President Nixon's fave- shrimp cocktail, Bill Clinton's rosemary chicken with pecan rice, ginger carrots and broccoli, and another Clinton delight- grilled salmon with sorrel sauce. Yummo! What's more, you don't have to pony up a five-digit campaign contribution to crash in the Lincoln Bedroom. The Madison is selling a rendition of the famed bedroom on its second floor for a year. Guests will appreciate details such as copies of the Gettysburg Address, and Emancipation Proclamation, which he wrote in the actual room when it was his office (President Truman converted it to sleeping quarters).

A replica of Honest Abe's rocking chair, and stately bed with decorative headboard are featured. Guests who purchase this package will receive keepsake towels embroidered with the words, "I slept in The Lincoln Bedroom". They'll also get a copy of historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln", two passes to DC's Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum to see President Lincoln seated in his box at fateful Ford's Theatre, and breakfast in bed for two. All in time for the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's 1809 birth.

Well, back to the food. The three-course prix-fixe menu is available from Jan. 10-25, 2009. Among the entrees are Maine lobster Newburg favored by Eisenhower, and Texas heart of filet mignon with berry sauce (LBJ). You can credit Pres. Clinton for the apple-cranberry Brown Betty, and Pres. George H.W. Bush for the brandied pear crisp and vanilla ice cream. His son dug the toffee pudding with caramel sauce. This is living! Whether it's the bedroom or the dining, come to the Loews Madison for a taste of presidential life, or at least to see how their guests live. Why not- history's in the making.

The Loews Madison is at 1177 15th St. N.W.
