On the outside looking in isn't a place Kyle Busch is familiar with. Over the past two seasons he has dominated both Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series events. With four wins to his name this season in Sprint Cup action Busch sits on the outside of the Chase bubble in 14th position some 37 points outside the top 12.
In a media event held on Tuesday September 8, 2009 Busch remarked on his 2009 season and his chances of making the chase.
"Yeah, the pressure is on for sure. We just have to do what we need to do", remarked Busch when asked about the pressure going into this weekend's Chevy Rock and Roll 400. Busch went on to say, "I haven't done some of the best driving I've needed to this year...If this weekend is a success, we win the race, still don't make the Chase, we did all we could."
Many NASCAR fans and drivers aren't fond of the current points system because it doesn't reward drivers for winning. Instead they are rewarded for constant finishes over the course of the 36 race season. Busch, who is tied with veteran driver Mark Martin for the most wins said, "...that's the way the sport goes sometimes. You've got to be consistent in order to make it."
Some have criticized Busch's decision to run full time in the Nationwide Series and part time in the truck series saying that it's really hurt his chances in the Cup car. Busch pointed out, "the only thing really cutting into my Cup program is me being able to spend time with (Steve) Addington at the racetrack without having to run back and forth between the garages and stuff like that. "
Busch also addressed his hopes for the upcoming race at Eldora Speedway, the love/hate relationship NASCAR fans have with him, and thoughts on Ron Hornaday still being competitive in the truck series at age 51.
