No wonder there is mass confusion. Both wood and laminate have their advantages and disadvantages.

Wood has many benefits. It creates a one of a kind look since each piece is different. It comes in a huge variety of species, from domestics to exotics. Wood comes in different widths from 2 1/4” to even 7” wide. It comes in stained, distressed, or hand scraped looks. These are some of the most sought after qualities of wood. However, there are four things every wood will do: It will age depending on the amount of exposure to sunlight especially exotics lighten or darken; it will scratch, dent, and expand and contract depending on the amount of humidity. The biggest enemy of wood is moisture.

Laminate is being made in more looks than ever from hand-scraped patterns to modular tile. It has benefits like it is more durable to scratches. Also, most laminate has a moisture treated core so it does slightly better with exposure to moisture over wood. Laminate can also be repaired somewhat easily; instead of replacing an entire floor. Most likely just the damaged portion can be replaced. One down fall of laminate can be it looks “fake” because laminate is a high resolution photograph, there can be little variation or the finish can look “fake”.

The most important thing to remember is no floor is indestructible, anything can be damaged. Keep realistic expectations when considering either choice.
