Once Twilight broke the box office wide open with $7 million in midnight sales alone, it was pretty much a done deal that the franchise would continue with a film version of the saga's second book, New Moon. What wasn't such a done deal, however, was whether 16-year-old actor Taylor Lautner would reprise his role as the (spoiler alert!) werewolf/shape-shifting Jacob Black.
Taylor wouldn't be replaced for a lack of acting chops (otherwise Robert Pattinson would certainly be canned), but because as Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg puts it, Lautner's character "Jacob is a totally different character in New Moon... He's a foot taller and huge-- and he's supposed to look 25. It's really a question of whether or not the same actor can play the role."
Rumors have circulated that older and arguably hunkier actor Michael Copon is the frontrunner to replace Lautner, but Taylor shouldn't start looking for work just yet. Rosenberg says "Everyone would love to keep [Lautner]. We all think he's the loveliest person ever."
Not to go all Twilight fangirl on you, but I can't help but agree. Taylor was one of the best parts of an otherwise questionable movie, and it would be a shame to see him replaced. Summit Entertainment, the production company behind the films, is slated to make an announcement on this casting decision by the end of the week.
