They're called
Obamicans.
They're recognized as Republicans who support Democratic senator Barack Obama. The Illinois senator originally referred to his unique voter block in a February speech in Madison, WI. At times, the references to Obamicans seemed like exaggerations. But in Colorado, they walk among us.
Particularly Sam and Mary Lou Appell.
"This race was so tight. I never thought it would go this long," said Mary Lou Appell referring to the Indiana and North Carolina primaries this week.
Mary Lou is 80 years old. Her husband Sam, who suffers from Alzheimer's is 87.
The Appells are Republicans. They have voted for GOP candidates for at least 5 decades, but they aren't voting that way this year.
"I like Obama," said Mary Lou. "I'm tired of seeing the same old people in government."
Her sentiments are not unlike many Coloradan Democrats who sport 'Obama '08' stickers on their bumpers or in their windows.
"I've always voted Republican," said Mary Lou. "But I just don't think McCain can do it."
I asked her why she felt that way. Mary Lou said she's worried about increasing health care costs especially for her husband. As for following the issues, this couple has been heavily plugged in. The two of them get out for a few minutes a day when the weather is nice and Sam feels well enough to take a walk. Other than that, their escape is watching television inside their two bedroom condo. And Mary Lou says she doesn't enjoy watching the soaps like her friends do.
"The soaps don't offer much in the way of substance," said Mary Lou.
Consequently, Mary Lou has her television tuned into cable television news channels. And this year, her news stations are on at least several hours a day. Mary Lou said the constant coverage about the candidates changed her perspectives on the political race.
Sam who had been silent, laughed for the first time during the twenty minute conversation after his wife mentioned Obama and said, "I hope he gets it! I want this to stop already."
Apparently, these Obamicans are ready for a one-on-one face off.
