One of the biggest expenses in travel is getting to your destination.

Buying food in grocery stores can mitigate food costs. Staying with a friend, at a hostel, or in a hotel a little outside of town can lower your accommodations costs.

But it's hard to fly cheaply; no matter how you cut it, a flight probably will set you back a few hundred bucks.

Here are three great websites, however, for finding airfare as cheap as possible:

Farecast

"Farecast allows you to easily compare, filter and sort flight results from hundreds of airline, hotel and agency websites to find the right trip. Farecast's award-winning technology also empowers you to Know When to Buy™ with airfare predictions and Know Where to Stay™ with the hotel Rate Key™."

As soon as I know I'm going to travel, I head to Farecast, enter my trip details, and sign up for alerts.

Airfare Watchdog

Airfare Watchdog is like Orbitz, Travelocity, and Farechase, but is one of the few airfare aggregators to include JetBlue and---a must for Louisville travelers---Southwest.

Travelzoo

Travelzoo is great if you want to go someplace but don't care where. Sign up for its e-mail newsletter and every week you'll receive an e-mail with the 20 best travel deals.
