If you're planning to travel for the holidays, now is the time to book your flight, if not sooner.
Some people have been lulled into a false sense of security by the low fares we saw last year. After all, the economy's not much better, so they should still be low, right? Not so fast, there's a flaw in that logic. It ignores the fact that the airlines haven't been sitting on their hands since last year.
Faced with too many seats and not enough bookings, the airlines held fire sales to sell them all, and we saw very low fares last holiday season. However, since then, they've been cutting capacity, so there aren't nearly as many seats as there were then. Fewer flights too, and the law of supply and demand takes over. Lower capacity, lots of demand caused by the great sales last year, and voilá, the price goes up.
Supply will get increasingly tighter as the holidays grow closer and more and more available seats are grabbed up. So fares, already higher than last year, are likely to increase even more over the next couple of months. If you're planning to visit Grandma in Cork this year, now is the time to book the flight before it gets even more expensive.
