If you want to sample cuisine from across the globe in one spot in Milwaukee, look no further than the Milwaukee Public Market. Located in the revitalized trendy Third Ward, this area was historically home to Milwaukee’s market activity for over one hundred years.
As this old warehouse district grew from an abandoned, run-down area of town, into the hippest part of the city—brimming with cafes, boutiques and lofts, the Milwaukee Public Market was created to pay homage to the market’s place in the district.
Today 20 specialty food vendors ply their wares at the market. Each merchant is the owner and operator, and in many instances, producer of what they sell.
On Saturdays in the summer, the market spills outdoors on the St. Paul Avenue and Broadway sidewalks and features more food vendors and artists.
Inside the market you can pick up fresh bread at the Breadsmith, fish from the St. Paul fish company, wine from Thief wines, spices from the Spice House and dessert from C. Adam’s Bakery to create a perfect dinner at home. The market is also a popular lunch spot featuring prepared foods from vendors like Aladdin, The Soup & stock Market and The Green Kitchen.
To teach aspiring chefs how to make the most of the ingredients for sale, the Public Market offers a host of demonstration cooking classes throughout the year. Local chefs teach classes like “Summer Rustic Tarts,” or “Fun French Cooking”. Most classes are about $25.
