If you can’t make it to China this season -- or even Portland, Oregon -- the Mendocino College Repertory Dance Company has an exhilarating alternative for your travel plans. The Pendulum Dance Theatre of Portland is joining them in Ukiah, California the weekend before Thanksgiving. They plan to mesmerize audiences with breathtaking aerial dances and acrobatics, suggested by impressions of China and the centuries-old traditions along the fabled Silk Road.
SILK is a two-part gift of theatre arts, dazzling in its execution. If anything could make the spectacle of vibrant dancing more intoxicating, it is the added luster of streams of silk entwining athletic young bodies.
“Shadows of the Silk Road” begins the first half of the program, featuring four dances choreographed by Leslie Saxon West. She is the Mendocino College Dance Professor and shares her impressions from a three-week trip to China earlier this year. Dances by other faculty choreographers will complete the first set.
The Pendulum Dance Theatre will present the second act, "Nine," an impressive exhibition of physical agility that will expand your understanding of the meaning of “twist and turn.” But this is not simply a display of gymnastics. Instead, these are inspiring glimpses of how exquisitely the body can perform when inspired and vigorously trained. The program will also include other dances and participants.
Performances will be at the Mendocino College Center for the Visual and Performing Arts. Friday and Saturday, November 20 & 21 at 8 p.m. There is also a Sunday matinee November 22 at 2 p.m.
The Ukiah campus of Mendocino College is at 1000 Hensley Creek Road, Ukiah, CA 95482. Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling (707) 468-3079.
