The Art Center Ukiah in downtown Ukiah is a cooperative of local artists who exhibit their work and teach classes in an atmosphere that encourages all artists and craftspeople. A visit to Mendocino County would be incomplete without experiencing some of its rich artistic heritage. This is a fine place to begin. Art Center Ukiah offers regular public events that showcase their work. In November, 2009 they held a whimsical fundraiser, "Draw Till You Drop." Prominent local artists showed up and publicly demonstrated their artistic skills in exchange for encouragement and pledges. Check 'em out at the slideshow below.
The gallery is located at 201 South State Street, zip 95482, a block from the Mendocino County Courthouse.
This marathon may have seemed reminiscent of the classic 1969 American film (and earlier novel), “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” The big difference was the Mendocino County spirit of, “Can’t we all just have fun?” Yes, artists learned how long they could stay awake and be creative in their chosen discipline, but a certain level of giddiness was evident after the first few hours. Visitors typically go in and out of the gallery while they explore the rest of downtown Ukiah, the county seat and largest city in Mendocino County. There are countless restaurants in the area.
There was painting, collage, felting, quilting, crocheting and creating mosaics. The mosaics were the work of Elizabeth Raybee, a popular local artist and educator. In fact, her work is featured in both windows of the gallery through November.
Donations may still be made and are tax-deductible and may be made by cash, credit card, check, or PayPal. For more information, call Elizabeth at 707-743-1437 or e-mail eray@eraybeemosaics.com.
