January 1st is always a bittersweet day for me. I love the promise of a new year and what it may hold. On the sadder side, it was exactly one year ago today, on January 1st, 2008 that one of my best friends passed away.
His name was Shadow. He was a Black Lab. I loved that dog. He was the most friendly and easy going dog I have ever met. When we lived in Park City, UT he frequently shared his dinner with a fox that came down from the foothills.
He was afraid of the Moose that wandered by, but was never angry with anyone or anything. He loved cats, dogs, birds, and as just mentioned, foxes.
His favorite game was fetch, though he didn't play by the standard rules. His version included him putting his football in his mouth and then trying to get you to try and get it away from him. My youngest son, was the only one in the family that could chase him down and get the ball.
When we moved to Phoenix, AZ he loved to play catch at the side of the pool. The game was played with us having a small basketball in the pool, and he would try to catch it standing next to the water. The ball was too big for him to catch, but he loved to play the game. We would try to throw the ball to him in just such a way, that it would bounce back and make a basket in the pool backboard.
Shadow, you were truly man's best fried. You will be sorely missed. Hopefully, you'll find someone in heaven to play "fetch" and water basketball with you until we get there.
