It’s been downright frigid in Nashville and it’s only getting colder. It’s hard to imagine that Spring is right around the corner and that great right of spring passage-Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras, isn’t that in late February? It’s only January now.
Mardi Gras festivities actually began in New Orleans on January 6 with the Feast of the Epiphany. Most revelers don’t head to New Orleans until closer to the massive parades and parties of Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday in English, on February 24. Mardi Gras festivities really get going during the beginning of February and now there are deals to be had, parades to be seen, and beads to be won. At only 8 hours, its less than a days drive to all the excitment. Just be sure to sleep off your "excitement" before you return.
Hotel Deals
Since it’s not peak Mardi Gras season, deals can still be found. Today, I found rooms walking distance to the French Quarter for the weekend of February 6-8 on Kayak for as little as $28/night. I also found four star hotels downtown for less than $90/night! Considering this is the only time of year you can visit New Orleans without suffering under intense humidity or intense threats from hurricanes, it’s a great deal!
Parades to See
Ok, I’ll be honest. The best parades are not until Mardi Gras on February 24, but do you really want to have drunks puking on you? I didn’t think so. Hit some of the earlier parades to avoid all the out of town drunks that can’t hold their booze. You can find a complete listing of parades and maps at http://www.mardigras.com/parades/, a site run by the New Orleans Times-Picayune. On Saturday, February 5th, Krewe du Vieux, one of the older and more satirical krewes, parades through the city. Then on Sunday you can catch the Krewe of Perseus as they parade through Slidell, a suburb of New Orleans.
Beads to be Won
Hmm, I’ll leave that one to you. Just Google, "catching mardi gras beads" and make sure you have “safe search” turned on.
