When you think of travel deals on Craigslist you probably think about buying somebody’s time share sight unseen or grabbing up a pair of amusement park tickets that you hope are real. There is actually a whole world of budget travel waiting to be discovered in the Nashville Rideshare section of Craigslist. Recently there have been rides offered to Houston, Little Rock, New Orleans, Syracuse and Orlando.
Who Should Look For Rideshares?
Rideshares are not for everyone. If you have poor personal hygiene, please don’t ruin another person’s trip by stinking up their car. If you are on a fixed schedule, this isn’t your best option, sometimes trips fall through. Rideshares are good if you need to get somewhere but still have a little flexibility in your schedule.
Who Should Offer Rideshares?
If you are thinking of offering a ride, take a few things into consideration first. First, are you comfortable around new people? While there is no rule about making small talk, if you get nervous around people you don’t know, you shouldn’t be spending hours in a car with them. Second, make sure you have enough room in your car to comfortably carry people and their bags. Nothing ruins a cross country trip faster then having your luggage in your lap all day. Finally, be specific with your request. Do you want help driving? Are you going to split fuel costs or is it on a mile basis? Are you willing to deviate from your route slightly in order to pick someone up or drop him off? Being specific will save a lot of headaches down the road.
Is It Safe?
Ridesharing has been around for decades. White collar workers in Northern Virginia put it on the map when High Occupancy Vehicle lanes were created back in the 1970’s. Guys in their suits and ties would park go to a commuter lot and find other people going to the same place. Once you had a full car you would drive to work and then take everyone home that evening. Craigslist ridesharing is the same concept. You are looking for people going the same place you are and ask them to ride with you. Of course, you should use common sense. If you get a bad feeling about someone when you call them to confirm, cancel!
Etiquette
There are three simple rules to ridesharing:
1) The Driver controls the temperature, windows, and radio.
2) The Rider will pay what is agreed to at the agreed upon time.
3) Obey the law
Other Options
Craigslist isn’t the only site, though it is by far the biggest with the most users. Other options include erideshare.com, ridester.com, and rideboard.com.
