One might think that breakfast would be a difficult meal for a vegan to eat. With no eggs or dairy in their diet, what’s left for breakfast? In fact, the notion that “breakfast is difficult” couldn’t be further from the truth. From fresh fruit to mock quiche there are as many breakfast options for vegans as there are for omnivores.
There are many fantastic non-dairy milks available on the market. Soy milk is probably what comes to mind when thinking of non-dairy milks. Rice milk, nut milk, hemp milk, and coconut milk are all growing in popularity. Any of these milk alternatives can replace cream in your morning coffee or milk in your bowl of cereal. There are also dairy alternatives to butter for your morning toast. Earth Balance is one of the more popular choices among vegans. Earth Balance is now available locally at Kroger and Meijer stores, as well as Whole Foods Market and Rainbow Blossom.
Need to have your morning bagel? No problem, there are many varieties of bagels that are indeed vegan. Slather on some tofu cream cheese, nut butter or hummus and you’ll be good to go. The bagels at Nancy’s Bagel Grounds on Frankfort Ave and Nancy's Bagel Box on South 4th Street are all vegan, request hummus or nut butter, as of now no vegan cream cheese is available.
There are many breakfast bars on the market that are suitable for vegans as well. Larabar is one popular brand, and not only are they vegan, but most are raw as well. A Larabar makes a perfect “on-the-go” breakfast. If the cost of Larabar prohibits you from grabbing a quick breakfast to go, consider making your own oat bars or granola bars. Buying ingredients in bulk will save you money as well. Muffins are another fantastic grab and go breakfast. You can easily find many recipes by conducting a google search, or try this recipe for whole-wheat blueberry flax muffins. Making a quick smoothie to take as you head out the door is another popular vegan breakfast. Make it a green smoothie for added nutrition.
But what about a more traditional breakfast? Pancakes are easy to veganize. There are many recipes available on the Internet. Most good vegan cookbooks also offer a section on breakfast, and many include pancake recipes. Try a tofu scramble to replace your breakfast of scrambled eggs. If you need sausage or bacon, there are many fantastic brands on the market, or you could make your own sausage and bacon to avoid the soy protein isolates that are found in many commercial brands. You can even have biscuits and gravy on your vegan diet!
It’s even possible to eat breakfast out as a vegan. It requires a little bit of homework to make sure the restaurant you’ve chosen has vegan options. Even if you don’t get to check ahead of time, most restaurants serve fruit, and many have soy milk available. Just be sure to tell your server you’re vegan.
Getting breakfast locally: North End Café offers a vegan taco on their breakfast menu, along with fruit and granola, just skip the yogurt and ask for soy milk instead for a tasty cereal. Meridian Café offers a peanut butter panini with bananas and berries. You can also get Zan’s hash. A combo of pan fried new red potatoes, shiitake mushrooms, onions and tomatoes (skip the cheddar cheese) topped with tahini sauce. And on Sunday from 10am to 3pm you can catch a delicious brunch at Ramsi’s Café on the World. The vegan options vary from weekend to weekend, but some of the selections are ginger plantain French toast, chocolate chip pancakes, steel cut oats, scrambled tofu burritos, vegan queso and soy sausage.
