With Sarah Palin being the surprise V.P. pick of John McCain, and then with the ensuing other surprises associated with the Alaska governor, the American public has rushed to conduct their own vetting process of Palin. For those of us in Washington state, particularly here in Seattle, where we watch cruise ships and tankers leave
Puget Sound heading for Alaskan ports of call, we feel particularly close to this process.
Why, Alaska is our vast backyard. We just didn't realize a secessionist-minded former mayor of a small outpost called Wasilla would come to be such an important figure for the future of the free world, therefore requiring us to seek out all sorts of "on-the-ground" information.
Helping us understand our presumptive GOP V.P. nominee (or has she withdrawn her name from the GOP ticket yet?) are a few insightful blogs and websites authored by Alaskans. Today, in honor of our blogging compatriots of the Northwest Passage, we would like to share some of the best of the Alaskan bloggers we've hunted down this past week.
1. Mudflats: Tiptoeing through the muck of Alaskan Politics.
Today's post from Mudflats is about the lawyer Gov. Palin has hired to defend her in Troopergate.
The picture above is from Mudflats' post this week. It is a photo from Wasilla, Alaska, home of Gov. Sarah Palin. Very downhome congrats to the presumptive V.P. nominee.
We are attempting to talk with Muckracker, the anonymous writer of this smart blog. Here is what he has to say about his inspiration for Mudflats:
"The thing that drove me over the edge, and into the blogosphere? Alaska Representative Don Young and the Republican Party voting against Mother’s Day (See my very first post). So, a nod to my muse, Don Young. Go figure.
I have worked as a promotional writer and editor in the magazine industry, marketing, advertising, and blogging for my business. This is the first time I’m writing from my own perspective without trying to sell something. I like it."
OK, we would like to continue the list of Alaskan blogs that have reall helped us understand Alaska and where Sarah Palin comes from etc, but really, this blog is stellar.
If you read the comments under the Palin posts, you can see how mesmerized Mudflats' readers have been.
One string of comments under a Palin post actually leads to a Wasilla woman named Sue Williams who vouches for Sarah Palin as the mother of Trig, but who really tipped off people about the daughter's pregnancy before John McCain announced it.
