Dancer Mark Morris' mother, Maxine Morris, dead at 90

July 9, 7:33 AM
by Laura Vecsey, Seattle People Examiner

A sad day for Seattle-born dancer and choreographer extraordinaire Mark Morris. His mother, Maxine Morris, died in her Mount Baker home July 4 of natural causes.

This was the same day Morris was opening a series of shows at the Fisher Arts Center in Westchester County, New York. Romeo & Juliet, On Motifs of Shakespeare, which ends tonight, is the subject of a piece on Mark Morris in the July 7 & 14 issue of The New Yorker.

Morris has always been deeply appreciative of his mother's support. She encouraged his artistic pursuits, found dance teachers for him, sewed costumes and, as Morris said, was completely accepting of his homosexuality.

And, in keeping with Maxine Morris' commitment to her son and the dance arts, here is what the family has requested:

In lieu of flowers, donations to support dance and music education for young people may be sent to: The Maxine Morris Memorial Fund, The School at the Mark Morris Dance Center, 3 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217.
