They have a peace garden at the Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church, which church officials say was planted and tended by all members of the neighborhood, not just members of the congregation. In fact, the church is a place where everyone in the nieghborhood is welcome. That's also true tonight, when a Rainier Beach Joint Block Watch group holds a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church 9656 Waters Avenue South, lower level. The meeting was called after James Paroline was punched and dropped to the street by a punch to the head last week. Paroline, who had blocked traffic to water a traffic circle garden, died as a result of his injury and today, police issued a warrant for the arrest of Brian Keith Brown, charging him with second-degree murder.
Church officials are not hosting the event, but will be on hand and some say they are concerned that the peaceful vigil that was held last week for Paroline might be replaced by something else entirely: A race-relations meltdown.
Paroline was white. The alleged assailant is black. And according the police reports issued in today's court order agains
t Brown, the incident was filmed in its entirety by a neighbor using a video recorder. Black & white and in living color, including the pool of blood that streamed from the injured Paroline.
The incident was graphic, violent and sadly unnecessary. It is now also criminal, with a murder charge attached. It is also about to serve as a flash point for some incredible racism being unleashed, if you take a look the message boards cropping up around this story.
We here at Examiner.com made a tough decision the other day. On a post from our Seattle Crime Examiner detailing the deadly incident in Rainier Beach, a string of comments turned alarmingly racist. While this site wants to promote conversation within the community, we can't be party to racist accusations that do nothing to bring back Mr. Paroline or gain full insight and understanding into the motivation of the crime. So we took down some of the comments, which were shockingly graphic and racist.
That the victim was white and the alleged assailant is black are the facts of the case. Everything else is up for the legal system to sift through. However, this sure seems like a point at which the larger Seattle community is going to get a chance to look at our inner racist.
