You drive over the Ballard Bridge every day and look down at all the hulking fishing boats docked at Fishermen's Terminal and, beside the fact that it's a very visually stirring scene -- a Seattle moment -- you sometimes actually remember that these working boats send Seattle-based fishermen out into the cold Bering Sea. The sculpture commemorating all the men and women lost at sea at the terminal's Fishermen's Memorial helps remind us, too.So why were we surprised to find a sign telling us we could come aboard and tour Sea Star, one of the boats from the hit show, Deadliest Catch? The tours started June 14 and, well, we're ready to check it out. That's right. We have today's uniquely Northwest adventure a mile from the house, now that Deadliest Catch captains have docked the boat and beckon Seattleites and Seattle tourists to climb aboard: "The SEA STAR awaits you in beautiful Seattle, Washington. You have seen it on television, now you can see it in person. Climb the ladder to the wheelhouse. Walk the deck where fortunes were made, where strong men were reduced to tears, where men struggled beyond exhaustion to stay alive; where not all succeeded in that struggle ...
The Northwestern is featured in one of the YouTube videos below as she pulls through the Ballard Locks and her crew is eagerly cheered by family and friends. Also, there is a really great blog, Deadliest Reports, which gives all kinds of information and updates on the series, crews and boats. Northwestern Captain Sig Hansen is going to serve as Grand Marshall in the Seafair parade next month in Seattle.
