Today, our friends in Peru have offered Barack Obama a solution to his canine issue: A Peruvian hairless dog.
So long, Goldendoodle.
Apparently, these fine people in Peru have not seen a Goldendoodle and are merely trying to be helpful, as the President-elect has in no uncertain terms told
the world that, in addition to the 1,000 points of darkness that the Bush administration has left him to deal with, Obama must also find a hypo-allergetic dog breed for his daughter, Malia.
Much has been made of this White House First Dog issue, which only reminds us here that the Westminster Dog Show is only ... three months away. In fact, the famous TV event that we like almost as much as the Super Bowl comes just after Obama's January inauguration. We are certain that by then, the nation and the world will have heard more than our share about the White House dog.
But as sick as we will get about the issue and the fact of The First Dog, it is with great anticipation that we await another Westminster appearance by David Frei, the Seattle-centric host of the famous championship dog show.
Frei, who owned Smiling Dog Public Relations in Seattle, and who is the author of Angel By My Side, has worked the Westminster for years, gracefully pulling dog discussions out of the saliva-messed mouth of Joe Gargiolia. A knowledgable and unflappable host, Frei will come well equipped to tell viewers about all manner of Presidential Pups (Springer Spaniels, Scottish Terriers and, well, the Peruvian?)
In this dog-eat-dog world, we look forward to a dog expert who can bring calm and un
derstanding to the doggy frenzy surrounding the impending new First Dog.
Oddly enough, on a Westminster Kennel CLub message board, an Australian hound fan talked about his desire to see a Peruvian hairless in the Hound Category for 2008!
YOU BETCHA that is going to happen! In fact, we're calling it now and taking it to Vegas:
Westminster 2009 Best in Show: Peruvian Hairless.
Is it a Hound?
