As Examiner.com/seattle begins building a community of local experts to deliver news, information and passion about all things Seattle, we've made some interesting discoveries about the local online community. This town is pretty sophisticated when it comes to Web use, but there's also a gnawing sense that in some circles (politics, transportation, sustainability, neighborhoods, real estate development) online Seattleites are more interested in talking amongst themselves than to the "larger" community. That's all good, although Examiner.com would love to try and connect local experts to a larger audience. On this topic of local writers passionate about the Seattle and their neighborhoods, the question for today is: What happened to Myzip.net? This online experiment owned by Seattle-based Marchex was shut down two weeks ago, although content from local residents in about 50 Seattle-area and Washington state zip codes can still be found online. 98119, for instance, is (was) Queen Anne; 98118 is (was) Beacon Hill; 98028 was (is) Issaquah. Examiner.com/seattle was happy to land Seattle Entertainment Examiner Alex Garcia, whose entries from his Capitol Hill online dispatch made him one of the most popular content providers on Myzip.net. It's a whole new ballgame here online where the industry shifts and changes daily, weekly, hourly. At some point, though, new models will succeed in bringing local experts to a mass audience. That's what we're aiming for ... so if any of you Myzip.net posters miss the action, you know where to find us.
