The Streets Are Alive With a Throng of Cruise Tourists
POSTED May 17, 10:15 AM
The weather is hot and the streets of downtown Seattle are flush with cruise-bound tourists killing a few hours on either side of their watery junkets. In a swift 24-hour turnaround, Seattle went from being a damp & cloudy outpost to a sunny & bright magnet for thousands of out-of-town sightseers. No less than eight cruise ships are due to set sail from the Port of Seattle (shedule here) this weekend.

Yesterday, for instance, I helped a couple struggling with a little map who couldn't figure out how to get from their cruise ship to Nordstrom. All it required was turning the map around and pointing them in the direction of Pike Street. Another couple, very nice, from Alabama, stopped into Yong Kang Chinese Medicine Clinic in the Sanitary Public Market. The husband had high blood sugar levels and needed something to get that under control. He must have been anticipating the buffet hazards that come with any cruise from Seattle to Alaska.

Over the last 10 years, Seattle's tourism boom has been seriously aided and abetted by cruise ship expansion. Between Holland America, Princess & Norwegian Sun, we get about 400,000 cruise visitors coming through each summer, which helped catapult Seattle back into the Top 10 travel destination places.
