Fish Were Flown In But Weren't Flying at Flying Fish
POSTED May 16, 3:19 PM
Would a $34.95-per-pound price keep Seattle restauranteurs away from Copper River Salmon? That sure seemed like a possibility this afternoon when my business lunch at the famously and enduringly excellent Flying Fish produced a lunch menu that did not include Copper River Salmon. No sockeye, no king, no nothing. And to think I emptied my bank account to treat myself and indulge in this uniquely Seattle rite of spring passage.

We know Copper River Salmon made it from Alaska to Seattle today. Alaska Airlines flew in a load, although it was a smaller shipment than anticipated. And during a walk through Pike Place Market, the fish guys there were throwing around some Copper River salmon -- gingerly -- in front of a clapping crowd.

But with pressure on the salmon industry and West Coast salmon fishing season canceled, the mood surrounding this year's Copper River ritual seems a little, well, washed up.
