The man has not been retired from Microsoft one week and already the spin-meisters in the political world are, well, spinning big time. The Capitol Hill newsmaker site Politico.com spun a good one when it listed Bill Gates as John McCain's longshot dream Vice Presidential partner. This Gates as VP idea sounds more like delusion than dream, but what the heck. We're game for these kinds of games. Gates stepped down last week from Microsoft and is turning his attention to his Gates Foundation -- the charitable entreprise whose wealth and scope eclipses many of the world's countries. Which leads to the obvious question: Why would a man who works closely with U2's Bono, whose vision of the world is being reshaped by global leaders whom Gates collaborates with to solve health and education issues, run as a GOP VP? Gates may not be left-leaning, but we can only suspect his leanings are Democratic these days, if not politically neutral. While it's nice to think a CEO and business leader might take on a vital role in tranforming our government, one has to be engaged in the political process -- and Gates has much bigger and better work to do through his emerging foundation, a real juggernaut in the making.
