November is a month dedicated to showing appreciation, gratitude, and respect for veterans, members of the armed forces, and military families. Whether you have a family member, a friend, a neighbor, or are a veteran yourself- it is a time to ponder the sacrifices and duty involved in service to the nation.
This November is especially poignant in light of the recent tragedy at Fort Hood, and the continued stress on military members and their families. There are many local and national veterans and military charities and organizations dedicated to showing thanks and appreciation. While this is a noble and honorable activity any time of year, November is especially important and meaningful.
President Barack Obama has proclaimed November 2009 as Military Family Appreciation Month. This Proclaimation begins, "No one pays a higher price for our freedom than members of our Nation's military and their families. As sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and mothers and fathers are deployed, military families endure with exceptional resilience and courage."
Soldier’s Angels is an organization dedicated to providing assistance, friendship, and support of troops.
Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and their families. Founded by the mother of two American soldiers, they are an international, volunteer-led organization supporting America's men and women in uniform. With over 30 different teams and projects, their nearly 200,000 volunteers assist veterans, wounded and deployed personnel and their families in a variety of unique and effective ways.
Army Crossroads.Com is another worthy organization which helps families and military. You can send a greeting card to a service member. – “For military families, by military families, our goal is to inspire, empower and appreciate you with the ideas, tools, resources and support to start your own home-based business. Whether you are just starting, struggling or ready to take your business to the next level, you've come to the right place!”
Veterans Day was originally established to honor Americans who had served in World War I. The national holiday is celebrated on November 11, the anniversary of the day World War I ended in 1918. Today Veterans Day honors veterans of all wars for their patriotism and willingness to serve in the military and sacrifice for our country.
Honoring and remembering the enormous sacrifices that veterans have made, and continue to make, is a duty of all Americans. The courage, valor, loyalty and bravery they have shown throughout our nation’s history can never be forgotten or taken for granted. They have safe-guarded our freedoms and continue to fight for the values and beliefs the American people hold most dear- democracy, equality, liberty, and freedom. These things do not come without a price. Our armed service men and women, both past and present, are the heroes who have upheld these precious gifts and are doing so at this very moment in time. It is important to do something to give back and to honor them all.
