Paolo, a spellbinding documentary by Andrea Franco Batievsky, featured at the Landmark Theater, last week. Paolo, one of the most exemplary films, among other socially conscious documentaries at the AFF, defined, in essence, what seemed to be the Atlanta Film Festival's focal theme this year, "the unashamed outcastes". In Paolo, a young gay man, is on a journey to rediscover his roots in Peru, as he returns there to find his long lost father. To no avail, he finds himself riddled in confusion and sadness when he, instead, finds a paternal older brother who was unaware of his existence. In his pursuit for acceptance, he reunites with friends and family, who openly accept his sexuality, in a society that refuses to. The account of Paolo's journey, is rich with humor and bold honesty. It was a delight to watch, as I traveled along with Paolo, in his search for an understanding of who he is, and what place he holds in a beautiful land full of history and culture.
