As the Vancouver Olympics approaches the 100-Days-To-Go milestone on November 4, the spotlight is focused on these upcoming Games.
While jumping on this bandwagon, I am starting a weekly column that highlights the top Vancouver Olympic stories of the past week – just in case your week flew by! I’ll be commenting on these hot topics, of special interest to USA fans, while providing links to all the details.
Torch Relay – On the first day of a 106-day journey, the torch relay was interrupted by hundreds of protesters who blocked the path several time in Victoria, British Columbia. Many of these lunatics have long been awaiting their 15 minutes of fame on this world stage.
Skiing – USA’s Lindsey Vonn and Ted Ligety raced well in the World Cup season opener for Giant Slalom. Vonn finished ninth, while adjusting to new equipment provided by her new sponsor, Head. And Ligety, well-recovered from a severe injury finished second.
Figure Skating: At the World Cup in Beijing, Olympics 2006 silver medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto (above picture - AP Elizabeth Dalziel) won the event finishing well ahead of the ice dancing pack. And, Evan Lycasek (2nd) and Rachel Flatt (4th) skated well in the individual events.
Snowboard – Olympic half-piper Louie Vito can now devote full attention to preparing for the USA qualifiers, since getting the veto from Dancing With The Stars. The first qualifier will be held in mid-December at Copper Mountain, CO.
Long Track Speed Skating: USA Olympic Team announced at Milwaukee Trials. Torino 2006 Olympians lead the pack: world record holder Shani Davis, Chad Hedrick, and Jennifer Rodriguez.
Curling: USA Men’s team fails to make the playoffs in the prestigious, pre-Olympic Grey Power World Cup in Canada.
Skeleton: The USA world cup team was announced – complete with two past Olympians, Eric Bernotas and Katie Uhlaender, who were granted medical waivers to make this team. Let’s hope they recover in time for the World Cup season start in Park City, UT later this month.
And last but (maybe) least...
Curling: USA Men’s team fails to make the playoffs in the prestigious, pre-Olympic Grey Power World Cup in Canada.
That's it for this week. Check back next Sunday for another weekly recap!
