Disney World is reopening its monorail system with new safety sensors in place following a fatal accident on July 5, according to reports. Click here to see the Orlando Sentinel article. The monorails are a popular form of transportation at the Disney World resort, running between the Ticket and Transportation Center and Epcot, as well as between the Center, the Magic Kingdom, and three hotels. Disney was relying on bus and boat transportation to move guests around while the accident was being investigated. Disney is reportedly telling its employees that the Occupational Health and Safety Administration has turned the monorail system back over to Disney. After system checks and other verifications, and upgrading certain safety procedures, the company has reportedly decided that it's same to resume operation. The station is pictured at right in a pre-accident photo.
Overall, the Disney World monorails have an excellent safety record. This accident, which killed 21-year-old pilot Austin Wuennenberg, was the first fatality in their 38 years of operation.
