On Wednesday, a worker at the Islands of Adventure theme park was badly injured by one of the cars on the Dueling Dragons attraction. The incident happened before the park was opened to guests, and details are very sketchy. However, a former Universal team member offered some speculation to WFTV on what might have happened. Click here for the story.
Dueling Dragons is actually two roller coasters, known as Fire and Ice. The suspended coasters have intertwined tracks (see photo at right) that allow the trains to pass very close to each other in a way that looks like they might collide.
The former team member, who used to work at Dueling Dragons, said that he can guess where the victim might have been hit. He said there is a point where guests typically lose items like cell phones, wallets, and other things in their pockets. Even though workers are supposed to stay out of any area that would put them in the path of a moving coaster train, the former employee said that it can happen. He speculated that the injured person might have been doing an inspection and paused to pick up some item.
He also said that if someone were to be hit there, they would face a high likelihood of being killed. At this point, the victim is still alive but struggling with multiple head fractures. He has regained consciousness since the accident and has been able to communicate, according to friends who have visited him.
While theme park rides are very safe, injuries do occur and they can happen to employees and guests alike. Click here for injury statistics for Universal and Disney World from earlier this year.
