The Associated Press reported today that after ten years of scanning ride photos from Splash Mountain to screen out shots of riders who like to flash the camera, Disneyland cast members have discontinued the practice. Scanning has also stopped on the Tower of Terror and the Space Mountain and California Screamin' roller coasters. Click here for the story.
In years past, some riders have bared their breasts, made obscene gestures, or done other inappropriate acts when their photo is taken to see if they would make it onto the photo preview screens at the end of the ride. Cast member screeners ensured that their antics wouldn't make it to public viewng. The Florida version of Splash Mountain, located in the Magic Kingdom, is shown at right.
Disneyland confirmed that the cast members who used to do the screening have been reassigned. The official explanation is that flashing and other inappropriate actions are rare. However, the reassignment of cast members to higher priorities makes sense as a cost cutting measure as well. Disney's quarterly profit fell 46 percent, and Disneyland's hotel occupancy was down 83 percent from a year earlier. In contrast, aggressive deals boosted Disney World's hotel occupancy was 89 percent, up slightly from the previous year, although guest spending fell 17 percent. So far there has been no word on whether Disney World is following California's lead and ending the photo screening.
