High Fuel Costs Hammer the Hummer
The Hummer is a constant sight on the roads around Highlands Ranch. There are so many of those big, metal, bricks on wheels around here, my friends tell me I live in "Hummer-ville, USA.”
Not any more.
Like everybody else, record gas prices are killing the folks at GM. They held a press conference the other day and announced GM will close 4 plants and push thousands of people out of their jobs.
GM’s Chief G. Richard Wagoner, Jr. also said the automaker is "undertaking a strategic review of the Hummer brand, to determine its fit with GM's evolving product portfolio."
Anybody who has spent time in a Dilbertville cubicle farm knows what that sentence means. When somebody says they are "undertaking a strategic review," they have just uttered the classic corporate Death Nell.
Just like the Colorado Rockies and Hillary's campaign for President, Hummer's "strategic review" means one thing.
It is toast.
Stick a fork in it.
Call for an undertaker and dig the hole.
The Hummer is dead.
We have known for more than 30 years that we are too dependant on foreign oil. (Anybody else remember waiting in line for gas in 1974?)
For a while, we all shouted for more fuel efficient cars and solar and wind power for our homes. But, that did not last very long. As soon as the gas started flowing again, we went blind to the past and began driving bigger and bigger vehicles. GM’s Hummer became the poster child for America’s energy over indulgence. Now, with gas prices blasting into record territory, it is only fitting that the Hummer, the big, brash, brick of America’s energy stupidity, is the first to die.
R.I.P. Hummer.
Park yourself right over there…between the 28 foot Winnebago with its double slide outs and my silvery, gull-winged De Lorean.
When it comes to energy smarts, we have not learned a damn thing in 30 years.
We are still as dumb as a box of Hummers.....uh, hammers.
