Bike To Work Day? Who Are We Kidding

June 25, 7:28 AM
by John Morrissey, Denver Traffic Examiner

Bike to work day is a nice idea. Save gas, get some exercise and ride a bike to work.

But, it is doomed.

Bike to work day is one of those “feel good” ideas that most of us will never get around to actually doing.  We have become too self centered these days in our “all about me” world.

It wasn’t always this way.

Back in the 70s, we saw the world as one. We were focused on undoing the bad habits of the past and saving the planet. We were dedicated to recycling, renewable energy and giving each other a big group eco-hug. We thought global and were ready to do something about it locally. It felt good being dedicated to doing something important.

Bike to Work day had a better chance of making it back then.

Today, most of us just don’t care. We act like we are ready for bike to work, cloth bags at the supermarket and solar or wind power, but recycling our plastic bottles every two weeks is about as much as most of us do to save our planet these days.  Some of us don’t even do that.

We still drive our big SUVs, choose plastic over paper at the supermarket and we don't ever think about alternative energy sources.  Hell, solar power is not even an option anymore.  It is against the covenants in many neighborhoods because those solar panels are ugly.

Face it, ecology has no place to live in our "screw the rest of you, it is all about me" world.

That is why I believe Bike To Work Day is doomed.

What do you think?
