A Few of Our Lawmakers Are Actually Smarter Than The Average Bear

May 1, 6:15 AM
by John Morrissey, Denver Traffic Examiner

Remember that idea of raising license fees to pay for much needed bridge and road repairs? Well, quite a few legislators took at it and some objected to the same part I did.  They said they would not vote for a measure that slapped drivers of older cars with a massive 200% fee increase.

This was the third time this session lawmakers tried to get something passed to pay for much needed road repairs.  It was the third time it failed.

Newest Way To Pay For Road Repairs Is An Ebenezer Scrooge Sucker Punch
First, the Governor wanted to hike car registration fees by $100 to pay for repairs. Nobody liked that idea very much.

A month ago, a couple legislators proposed tolls for I-70, west of Denver. That measure died an ugly death, too.

And now, they have decided that picking on drivers who are too poor to drive a new car, or even a new, used car is a bad idea, too.

Chalk one up for common sense, Boo Boo.

But, that still leaves us with the problem. Our bridges and roads need a lot of work and this is not stuff we can put off. The 800-pound gorilla is finding a way to pay for it.

Suppose you were up there at the capitol. How would you pay to repair our roads?

Would you favor a tax increase? Would you raise fees? Do you think toll booths are the way to go?

Maybe you want to do something totally off the wall, like installing slot machines out at DIA.

There is no stupid idea….no wrong answer. The only thing that you can NOT do is drag your feet and put this work off. You need to find the cash to pay for this work and you need to find it now.

What would you do?
