Let’s face it. A lot of people do not obey the speed limits…ever.
One of the worst places is on I-25, between Belleview and Broadway. Since TREX added those extra lanes, a lot of people bust the speed limit through there and a lot of people get busted for doing it.

So today, CDOT raised the limits. It is now legal to drive 65 mph on I-25, between Belleview and Yale, and speed limits have been upped to 60 mph between Yale and Broadway.
As your Denver Traffic Examiner, I give this move “two thumbs up.” But, it is my duty to point out that there are plenty of other places where the speed limits deserve a tweek.
Here is my Top 5 Places Where the Speed Limit is Too Slow.
#5: 6th Avenue….Kipling to I-70. 6th Avenue is one of those sucky drives with too many cars and not enough lanes but, the west end of it opens up nicely. I say let’s up the speed limit on 6th Avenue, between Kipling and I-70. Allow us to kick it a little as we head out of town.
#4: US 36/The Boulder Turnpike….Sheridan to I-25. Most of The Boulder Turnpike is Hell’s Highway. It stinks! But, as you drive east and pass Sheridan, The Boulder Turnpike opens up nicely. So, let’s get racy! Let’s kick the speed limit to 60 or 65 mph through there. While we are at it, let us be more inclusive on The Boulder Turnpike. At night and on weekends, everyone ought to be able to use the HOV lanes on US 36.
#3: I-70…Out East. Let’s face it. Colorado needs a new tourist attraction. Everyone has seen the mountains and skiing is just too damn expensive. I have an idea. How about a Colorado Autobahn? The wide open spaces, east of Denver, are perfect! Let’s take I-70, from E-470 to Kansas, and make it a speed limit optional zone. Then, we build grandstands along the highway so we can sit and watch everyone zip by at the speed of sound. It will be just like sitting on the 50 yard line at Mile High….only faster.
#2: I-225...Parker to I-25. The middle part of I-225 is a mess, but I love the new part. Driving southbound on I-225 is great, once you go past Parker Road. The highway opens up and there is beautiful view of the snow capped mountains, too. So, let’s kick the speed limit up thru there. I say 70 mph for cars and for the light rail trains, too. First one to I-25 wins!
#1: Eastbound I-70...Coming Down the Hill. Gas is expensive….but, gravity is free! With gas prices on the rise, coasting is suddenly cool again. There is no better place to coast than on eastbound I-70, from Genesee down to C-470. I think CDOT ought to ratchet up the speed limits on the down hill part of eastbound I-70 so we can kick the car out of gear, roll down the windows, feel the wind in our hair and save some gas at the same time. And while you are at it, how about adding a couple more of those flashing “your speed is” signs along that stretch?
